The St Paul Institute (variously known as the St Paul Institute of Arts and Sciences and the St Paul Institute of Science and Letters) began planning in 1906 to open a science museum in Minnesota's capital city. In 1964 the museum moved to the St Paul-Ramsey Arts and Science Center, and in 1978 the Science Museum of Minnesota opened a new purpose-built facility. In 1999 it relocated to its new building overlooking the Mississippi River.
